Informatica Rises to the Big Data Management Challenge

Managing data even before it got ?Big? was never all that easy. Now that IT organizations are not only starting to realize how much data there really is, thanks to technologies such as Hadoop that make it affordable to store it all, data management is rapidly becoming a crisis. The challenge is going to be finding a way to make any given subset of all that Big Data available at the just the right time that an application wants to invoke it.

At the Strata + Hadoop World conference this week, Informatica announced that it intends to rise to meet that challenge with the launch of Informatica PowerCenter Big Data Edition, a framework for managing data large and small across Hadoop and more traditional enterprise data repositories.

According to John Haddad, director of product marketing for Informatica, Big Data is really at the nexus of three converging megatrends: cloud computing, mobile computing and social networking. Trying to manage that volume of data using existing data management approaches simply won?t scale, says Haddad. What?s required is a new approach to data management based on a visual set of tools that extract, load and transform (ETL) data at very high rates of speed.

The goal, says Haddad, is to provide a layer of data management services that essentially masks the complexity of underlying data repositories such as Hadoop.

In a world where IT organizations are moving from actively managing 10 to 20 percent of their available data to managing all of it, the challenges are nothing short of immense. Unfortunately, most IT organizations are not going to get more people to throw at the Big Data management challenge, which ultimately creates a need for a data management framework that allows the existing IT staff to effectively manage massive amounts of information that will continue to grow exponentially as far as the eye can see.

Analysis: Calm Romney pins hopes on momentum

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney is acting like a challenger who feels he has enough momentum and time to overtake the president by Election Day, two weeks from now.

Judging from Monday's final debate, President Barack Obama almost seems to agree.

Obama was clearly the more aggressive combatant in the 90-minute forum, whacking Romney's personal investment record, truthfulness and overseas fundraising. Romney, meantime, went out of his way to blunt his differences with the president on several key foreign policy matters ? supposedly the debate's focus ? and to appear calm, moderate and non-threatening.

Romney's approach was one typically taken by front-runners: First, do no harm. Don't stir the pot. Keep the clock running.

Obama's forcefulness appeared chiefly aimed at discouraged Democrats who might not bother voting, rather than at the sliver of undecided voters in the handful of states still in play. Romney is not the benign, acceptable alternative he claims to be, Obama seemed to be saying, and I, your president, am finally willing to fight tooth and nail for a second term after sleepwalking through the first debate, which triggered Romney's rise in the polls.

"It's all get-out-the-vote now," said Matt Bennett, a veteran of Democratic campaigns. "If you're undecided now, you ain't voting."

"Obama will win the debate on points," Bennett said, "but it won't matter much."

A number of other Democrats shared that view. Interest in the third and final debate probably suffered, they said, from voter fatigue, competition from televised football and baseball games, and the official topic ? foreign policy ? in a campaign dominated by jobs and the economy.

These Democrats, however, don't necessarily think Obama will lose. Some feel Romney took a big gamble by being so tame in the final face-to-face encounter.

Obama still holds a slight edge in Ohio in most independent polls. It's the state that can almost seal the president's re-election if he holds it, because it would force Romney to sweep virtually every other contested state, including tough Wisconsin.

Romney's stay-the-course demeanor Monday points to confidence that his slight rise in the polls will continue, even if only a smidgen of voters are truly undecided. Democrats note that many thousands of people are already voting through early balloting programs in key states.

The election's outcome may turn on whether Obama's get-out-the-vote ground troops can outrun Romney's momentum. Polls show Romney doing considerably better among likely voters, as opposed to registered voters. That gives Obama's volunteers a chance to hunt down thousands of "soft supporters," and persuade them to get to a polling place.

From the debate's opening minutes, Romney showed no appetite for verbal fisticuffs. Moderator Bob Schieffer invited the former Massachusetts governor to critique Obama's handling of the fatal attack on a U.S. Consulate in Libya, a topic Romney had fumbled in the second debate, six days ago.

Romney showed no interest. Instead, he congratulated the president on the killing of Osama bin Laden, hoping to negate an Obama strong point as quickly as possible.

Throughout the evening, Romney continued a recent trend of moderating his foreign policy positions. He seemed bent on presenting himself as a sound commander in chief, even if it required him to narrow his differences with the president.

Romney offered unusual praise for Obama's war efforts in Afghanistan, declaring the 2010 surge of 33,000 U.S. troops a success and asserting that efforts to train Afghan security forces are on track to enable the U.S. and its allies to put the Afghans fully in charge of security by the end of 2014.

Romney said U.S. forces should complete their withdrawal on that schedule. Previously he has criticized the setting of a specific withdrawal date.

And on Iran, Romney mollified his previous criticism of Obama's sanctions policy. He stressed that resorting to war to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon would be a last option, softening the hawkish tone that had been a hallmark of his campaign.

Longtime GOP strategist Terry Holt defended Romney's soft touch.

"His first goal is to appear presidential," Holt said. "This is not a grand jury where all he has to do is indict. People are looking to him for presidential qualities. Cool, calm and clear."

Obama, by contrast, looked for every chance to criticize Romney on as many topics as possible.

"Governor, when it comes to our foreign policy, you seem to want to import the foreign policies of the 1980s, just like the social policies of the 1950s and the economic policies of the 1920s," Obama said.

He chided Romney for having said Russia was America's greatest geopolitical foe. "The Cold War's been over for 20 years," Obama said.

"Presidents always have an advantage when debating foreign policy," said Republican consultant Matt Mackowiak. "Romney did well enough tonight to maintain his momentum and win this race."

Obama has 14 days to stop that momentum. He plunges in immediately Tuesday with events in Delray Beach, Fla., and Dayton, Ohio. On Wednesday and Thursday the president plans to campaign in Iowa, Colorado, California, Nevada, Florida, Virginia and Ohio.

Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, on Tuesday were headed to Nevada and Colorado. Romney planned to campaign Wednesday in Nevada and Iowa, and Thursday and Friday in Ohio.

Neither ticket can afford to write off the other competitive states. But Ohio seems destined to be the testing ground of whether Obama's tiny lead and big ground operation can hold off Romney's October momentum.

(AP) ? Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip fired dozens of rockets and mortar shells into southern Israel on Wednesday in the heaviest bombardment on the area in months, drawing ominous Israeli threats of retaliation and dangers of escalation.

The violence came a day after a landmark visit to Gaza by the emir of Qatar. Israeli officials suggested the visit, the first by a head of state to the Hamas-ruled territory, emboldened the militant group.

The rocket fire began shortly after the emir left Gaza late Tuesday and continued through the night. Israeli officials said more than 80 projectiles were fired, and Hamas claimed responsibility for many of the attacks.

Israel responded with a series of airstrikes on rocket launchers, killing two Palestinian militants, according to Gaza medical officials. Two other Palestinians were killed Tuesday.

Three Thai laborers working on an Israeli farm were wounded, two seriously, when a rocket hit a chicken coop. Other rockets badly damaged five houses and broke car windows. Schools in the area were closed.

Many people spent the day indoors, while others stayed in close proximity to the makeshift cement shelters found in the streets of southern Israeli towns. In one farming community, shrapnel covered trees and a children's playhouse in a backyard.

"Sometimes it feels like a scene out of the movie 'Platoon,' something out of the Vietnam war. We can stay at home and just hear the noise of the war," said Tamara Cohen, a resident of the border community of Ein Habesor whose children, ages 9 and 5, spent the night in a fortified "safe room" in their home.

A video issued by Hamas' military wing showed six rockets peeling off in rapid succession, then later, from what appears to be a different location, eight rockets shoot off, leaving plumes of black smoke behind them. Hamas said the video was made earlier in the day, though it provided no proof.

Hamas officials shuttered schools in border areas. Residents said they worried an escalation of fighting would ruin the upcoming Muslim celebration of Eid al-Adha, when Gaza residents feast, visit families, dress their children in new clothes and take them out to play.

Despite the violence, streets in Gaza City were crowded with residents snapping up clothes and food ahead of Friday's start of the holiday. Traffic jams blocked main roads, and prayer leaders chanted songs for the feast.

Israeli leaders threatened tougher action against the rocket fire.

"We didn't ask for this escalation and didn't initiate it," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said after touring a missile defense battery. "But if it continues, we are prepared to embark on a far more extensive and penetrating operation." The army said the "Iron Dome" defense system intercepted at least eight rockets.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Israel Radio that "if we need a ground operation, there will be a ground operation. We will do whatever necessary to stop this wave" of violence.

Israel's U.N. Ambassador, Ron Prosor, wrote to the U.N. Security Council warning members that if they don't condemn the rocket attacks, "there could be tragic consequences" because Hamas and other militants will interpret the silence "as a green light for terror and provocation."

Israel carried out a broad military offensive in Gaza nearly four years ago in response to years of rocket fire. Salvos from Gaza have largely subsided since then, though sporadic violence persists.

The territory is home to numerous militant groups, including murky al-Qaida-inspired organizations that do not answer to Hamas. Gaza has also been flooded with weapons in recent years, many of them believed to have been smuggled from northern Africa and into Gaza through tunnels under the Egyptian border.

On Wednesday, the African country of Sudan accused Israel of carrying out airstrikes that blew up a weapons factory in the capital, Khartoum. Israeli officials did not comment, but analysts said that if the reports were true, the airstrike might have attacked a weapons smuggling route. Sudan has accused Israel of being behind a similar attack on an arms convoy in 2009.

Hostilities in Gaza have been simmering for weeks, with militants sporadically firing rockets into Israel and the Israeli air force responding with airstrikes.

Hamas, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in suicide bombings and other attacks, has largely avoided attacks since a devastating Israeli military offensive nearly four years ago. Instead, smaller groups have been behind most rocket fire, sometimes with Hamas' tacit blessing and sometimes against its wishes.

While Hamas remains virulently anti-Israel, it has sought to keep things quiet as it consolidates its control of Gaza. The group violently seized the territory from the rival, Western-backed Fatah movement five years ago.

Tuesday's visit by Qatar's emir, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, gave a powerful boost of legitimacy to Hamas rule, which is not internationally recognized.

Hamas officials said the emir urged Hamas to do everything possible to avoid violence with Israel. Israel's foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, suggested the visit had the opposite effect.

"I think what we see, especially yesterday, the visit of the emir of Qatar in Gaza, it's clear support for terror and terrorist activity," he said at a news conference with the visiting EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton.

In his meeting with Ashton, Israeli President Shimon Peres charged that Qatari money is funding Hamas attacks. "No one in the world could agree to the current situation" of repeated rocket salvos, Peres said.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum accused Israel of trying to raise tensions. He said Israel was upset about the "political and economic gains" reaped from the emir's visit, and wanted to "disrupt the atmosphere ahead of the holiday."

Mukheimar Abu Sada, an independent analyst in Gaza, said Hamas had no interest in clashing with Israel now but likely felt pressured after two of its men were killed in an Israeli strike late Tuesday.

"Hamas is under pressure from the people: 'Where is the resistance that you speak of?' Hamas needed to save face," Abu Sada said.

AMC Channels Return To Dish After $700M Settlement - Business ...

Mad Men

AMC's "Mad Men" will be restored to Dish after $700M settlement following $2.4B lawsuit.

Cablevision and AMC have finally settled their $2.4 billion lawsuit against Dish after the satellite provider dropped the network, and other VOOM channels, in June.

"Dish will pay a settlement of $700 million to Cablevision and AMC Networks, $80 million of which will go for the purchase of Cablevision's multichannel video and distribution licenses in 45 U.S. metropolitan areas," reports The Wrap.

Dish resumed broadcast of the AMC channel on Sunday--just in time for the broadcast of the popular "The Walking Dead."

Other networks, including AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel and WE TV, will be available to Dish customers starting November 1.

After today's cease fire in what has been a very dramatic cable war, it seems there are no hard feelings between the cable channel and its on-again-off-again satellite provider.

Dave Shull, senior vice president of programming at Dish, states, "We are glad to have settled the case and reestablished our long-term relationships with AMC Networks and Cablevision. This multi-year deal delivers a fair value for both parties and includes digital expansion opportunities for AMC Networks? programming.?

Cablevision, too, is playing nice, with AMC Networks President and CEO Josh Sapan saying "We are glad to partner again with DISH Network and are delighted to bring back our popular channels and programming to their customers."

The settlement comes after a "mistake" note was posted on the New York State Supreme Court website Thursday that said there would be a ?possible settlement? when the trial resumed.

As the trial proceded in New York Court last week, things looked increasingly bad for Dish as deleted emails were uncovered that would hurt their case "in a big way" while AMC's "The Walking Dead" premiere last week earned huge, better-than-broadcast ratings--proving AMC?s status as one of the top basic cable networks.

Publishing in Israel: A Snapshot Overview | Publishing Perspectives

?At any one moment roughly half the books on the local bestseller lists will be translations.?

By Daniel Kalder

Ziv Lewis

Israel is a small but energetic book market, with its own peculiarities, notes Ziv Lewis, Foreign Rights and Acquisitions Manager at the Kinneret Zmora Dvir Publishing House.

?In general we are lucky to operate in a literary market. The most successful books in translated fiction tend to the literary end of the spectrum. In recent years, Nicole Krauss?s The History Of Love, Jonathan Safran Foer?s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Aleksander Hemon?s The Lazarus Project have all sold correspondingly more here than abroad. Other literary authors like Paul Auster and Haruki Murakami were bestsellers here in Israel in the 1980s before they received international acclaim.?

The appetite for books in the country of only seven million is prodigious: 4,000,000 Hebrew readers, 1,500,000 Arabic readers and 1,500,000 Russian readers support two major bookselling chains (Steimatzky and Tsomet Sefarim) and a total of 300 stores. 4,200 new titles are published each year while 35 million books are sold annually. The market offers good opportunities for foreign publishers and agents as 40% of those books are translations, out of which a mere 40% come from the English speaking world.

?We have no language barrier. At any one moment roughly half the books on the local bestseller lists will be translations,? explains Lewis. ?The percentage increases for children?s and young adult books. Israel is a cultural melting pot and there is no problem translating, publishing and marketing translated work. Ten years ago Indian fiction was particularly popular here, and that was followed by Spanish. Now the trend is Scandinavia, of course, and we are constantly trying to assess where the next fruitful literary shopping area will be: China? Brazil??

A Growing Community of Publishers

Of the fifty publishers listed by The Book Publishers Association of Israel, half are involved in foreign acquisitions. These include the venerable Kinneret Zmora, founded in Odessa in 1919 (backlist of over 6,500 titles, publishing 300 titles annually), the Keter Publishing House (backlist of 3,300 titles, publishing 100 new titles annually), Yediot Achronot (backlist of over 3,000 titles and publishing around 250 new titles annually) and Am Oved (backlist of over 5,000 copies, currently publishing 80 new titles annually). The average print run is 1,500 copies, while author advances range from ?1,000 to ?100,000 although, adds Lewis, ?most are under ?3,000.? The standard royalty scale for Israel is 6% from retail price on the first 3000 copies sold, jumping to 8% on sales up to 6000 and 10% thereafter. As for contracts:

?We try and insist on an eight-year license. In a market as small as ours, there is very little chance of a new contract so it makes sense to give the publisher maximum opportunity to exploit the market fully.?

E-books however have scarcely made an impact on the Israeli market:

?We waited a long time for a Hebrew-friendly e-reader and unfortunately when e-vrit finally arrived, it failed to capture the public?s imagination. Kindle, Sony, Nook, Kobo, etc. are not available, and with no successful Hebrew-friendly platform it looks like Israel will skip the dedicated e-book reader phase altogether and move straight to tablet.?

The fact is, says Lewis, ?Firstly, in this tiny country with over 300 bookstores no one is ever very far from a bookshop, and secondly the price of paper books is so low due to deep discounting.?

Bookstore Competition Leads to Pricing Problems

Indeed, although the average catalog price of a new book is 18 euros, they rarely sell at that price ? and pricing is the major problem in the Israeli market as Lewis explains:

?In the absence of a fixed price law, there is an ongoing discount battle between the two chains with the majority of books in recent years being sold at well over 50% discount, and often as high as 80%. This has had a catastrophic effect on the industry which is now in deep crisis. Independent book stores are closing, publishers are selling greater quantities of books but are earning far less per copy sold, and it has become impossible to market a book successfully unless it is part of one of the special bookstore promotions.?

As a result the government has proposed a law preventing discount price reduction for 18 months from first publication. This will increase the cost of books in Israel, says Lewis, but he wonders: ?Will it deal effectively with the deep discounting demanded from publishers by the retail chains??

Still, the battle of the chains has not been entirely negative:

?Israelis love to read. One of the positive effects of the battle of the chains is the democratization of the market. Books are not a luxury item here and are affordable for everybody. This has meant that we have an ever-widening circle of readers in recent years. The largest potential right now is in the teenage market. Israeli youngsters have compulsory military service from the age of 18 (3 years for boys, 2 for girls) and so our teenage market is clearly delineated. The top series regularly sell in excess of 50,000 copies per title.?

Republicans Dispute the Humor of 'Romnesia'; Axelrod Hates NBC's Polls

Sen. Marco Rubio went on ABC's This Week to say he did not Obama's 'Romnesia' line very funny. Nope, not very funny at all, Mr. President.?"That fires up his base, people who are going to vote for him anyway," Rubio said. "But for the rest of Americans who are trying to make up their mind who to vote for, what they're wondering is, 'Well, that?s very cute Mr. President, but what are you going to do for the future?'" Rubio went on to say the President?has "utterly given up" on outlining a plan for his second term. He echoed those sentiments on Meet the Press and Face the Nation, too. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, an old Obama pal, came to the President's defense and outlined the things he's planning for his second term.?"The most important thing right now for the second term is to do what has worked in the past," Emanuel said. "That is how you move an economy forward." Rubio, who didn't offer any details of the confusing Romney-Ryan tax plan, was still unimpressed.?"That sounds like a lot of spending," he said.

People who turned in to CBS's Face the Nation were chanting barn fight! barn fight! during the segment with?Obama Deputy Campaign Manger Stephanie Cutter and Romney campaign adviser Kevin Madden. Madden didn't find the 'Romnesia' line very funny, either.?"The very fact that the president of the United States has to utter a term like that just is a glaring example of how small the campaign has been," Madden told host Bob Schieffer. "The Obama campaign has not been one about the future... Instead, they?ve reduced themselves to very small attacks like 'Romnesia'?along with this talk about binders, this talk about Big Bird, I mean all of it is really indicative of a candidate who doesn?t have a vision for the future."?Cutter reminded Madden that it was Romney who started talking about Big Bird and who said the 'binders full of women' line.?"We are not the ones that brought up Big Bird. Big Bird is important because that?s the only thing Mitt Romney could point to as to how he?s going to reduce the deficit," she said. "Deficits are a big issues in this campaign and that?s the only thing you can point to... The president has a detailed plan on the table as to how to reduce these deficits." Cutter said it was a "playful term" to describe what Romney's doing at the end of the race:?"he?s running to the middle." Madden, evoking Maud Flanders, thinks the Obama campaign needs to think about the unemployed.?"I don't think the message to voters right now ought to be playing Scrabble with your opponent's name when you have 23 million people struggling to find work," he said.

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers went on State of the Union to explain Romney's gains in the polls are because he's starting to gain traction with the ladies.?"We're seeing these polls close, and you know what? I think they're seeing Gov. Romney unfiltered in the debates, they're seeing him and his record when it comes to women," she said.?Rep. Donna Edwards agrees women are getting to know Romney, but thinks they aren't going to fall for him on election day.?"What you're seeing in the polls is that women care about a lot of things," Edwards said. "At the end of the day, they're going to look at Obama?s record as a demonstration of what he?ll do in the future, and they will look at Romney?s words and understand that he really has not stood on the side of women."?

Sen. Dick Durbin took Darrell Issa to task for his ill-advised Libya document dump?that revealed the names of several Libyan operatives working with the U.S. Durbin accused Issa of trying to leverage the Libya situation for political gain on Fox News Sunday. Durbin said the administration was trying to?"engage in a comprehensive investigation of what actually occurred" during the September 11 attack on the Consulate in Libya.?"Lets gather the evidence, let?s make sure we understand exactly what did occur. But jumping to conclusions, I mean Darrell Issa does a document dump on his website with sensitive information about those in Libya who are helping keep America safe, I mean it shows the lengths many will go to politicize this tragic situation," Durbin said.

Newt Gingrich doesn't care if Obama thinks it's "offensive" Republicans are questioning his handling of the situation in Libya. He told that to host Candy Crowley, fresh off her debate performance, on CNN's State of the Union. He also recently saw Argo so he compared Obama's Libya crisis to the Iranian hostage situation.?"Should Ronald Reagan not have talked about it for 444 days?" Gingrich?said. "The fact is, we're in the middle of a mess in the Middle East, the mess keeps evolving, there continue to be incidents." Gingrich argued that the State Department, and the President, are responsible for not increasing security when asked by workers at the Consulate there.?"If that offends the president, then that?s his problem and he ought to get over it," Gingrich said.

Sen. Lindsay Graham went on Fox News Sunday to say he sees through the Iran's ploy. They're just saying they're going to agree to nuclear talks so all the election season attention is on them. It's all about them, them, them.?"The Iranians are trying to take advantage of our election cycle to continue to talk," Graham said. "As we talk with the Iranians whether it?s bilaterally or unilaterally, they continue to enrich and the Vice President and the President have said we will do nothing with out coordinating with Israel." Chris Matthews asked what Graham though about the report coming out two weeks before voting day.?"I think it?s pretty obvious they are trying to continue a dialogue using our election cycle in a pretty clever way," he said.

David Axelrod gave NBC's David Gregory a piece of his mind on Meet the Press. Evidently, Axelrod is none too impressed with NBC's polling.?"You guys also issued polls in the last week that showed us with an 8-point lead in Iowa, I think we had a lead in Ohio, you?ve showed us having? a lead in Florida. I don?t know how to square all the polling that NBC is releasing," Axelrod said. NBC released a poll this week that showed the President in a 47-47 dead heat with Romney.?"I do think that this is going to be a very close race, and we've said that consistently," he said. "We feel good about where we are. We feel we?re even or ahead in these battleground states." Axelrod feels good about early voting returns and thinks the numbers are in their favor.?"It?s very robust, and it's very favorable to us," he said. "And we think that?s a better indicator than these public polls which are frankly all over the map."

Axelrod also had the quote of the day. He described Romney's foreign policy tour as "his Dukes of Hazzard tour."?

Hi. I'm Art Buchwald, and I Just Died.

A year after Steve Jobs? untimely death in October 2011, and as the feast of All Souls nears, I?ve been thinking about How We Die.

*? ?*? ?*?? *? ?*

You remember Art Buchwald:? He was an American political satirist and commentator best known for his long-running syndicated column, which originated at The Washington Post. ?In 1982 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Outstanding Commentary, and in 1986 he was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.

Buchwald was a crusty guy who dropped out of high school, ran away from home, then lied about his age to enter the Marine Corps during World War II?bribing a drunk with half a pint of whiskey to sign as his legal guardian. ?After the war he attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, becoming managing editor of the campus magazine Wampus and writing a column for the school newspaper, the Daily Trojan; but the college, on learning that he?d never graduated from high school, refused to award him a degree.? Buchwald?s hijinks, at home and abroad in Paris, continued to earn him a spotlight; and his column was nationally syndicated in 1962.

Buchwald suffered a stroke in 2000, at the age of 74, and was hospitalized for over two months. ?Then in February 2006, he had a leg amputated below the knee due to poor circulation. ?Shortly after that, he revealed his decision to discontinue hemodialysis, which was made necessary by renal failure due to diabetes.? ?If you have to go, the way you go is a big deal,? he explained, indulging his penchant for McDonald?s hamburgers over health foods.

Buchwald seemed to have cheated death once again.? He said, in an interview with Diane Rehm, that his kidney had begun working again.? ?I bless him every morning,? he said.? ?Some people bless their hearts; I bless my kidney.? ?But the reprieve was short-lived; Buchwald died on January 17, 2007.? The next day, the New York Times posted a video obituary on their website in which Buchwald himself declared:? ?Hi. I?m Art Buchwald, and I just died.?

*? ?*? ?*???*?? *

In reading about Buchwald?s passing, I couldn?t help but chuckle at his wry approach to what would be his Last Days; but it was sad, too?Buchwald?s closing of the book of his life, the inference by absence. ?Nothing in the news reports, in his radio and television interviews, in the syndicated columns which continued until his death, pointed to any sort of faith in God, or in an after-life.? In Buchwald?s mind, it appeared, death was a robber that would end all the fun, all the shenanigans, all of everything.

*? ?*? ?*?? *? ?*

So along came Steve Jobs, who died on October 5, 2011, at the age of 56 after an eight-year battle with pancreatic cancer. ?In his official biography, built on long conversations between Jobs and the author, Walter Isaacson,?Jobs said that there is ?about a 50-50 chance? that God exists.? He abandoned Christianity when he was only 13, after seeing a photo of starving children on the cover of Life magazine. ??Do you think God knows what will happen to them?? he asked his Sunday school teacher. Perceiving a heartless God that did not intervene to help the needy, Jobs never went back to church.

Later in life, Jobs studied Zen Buddhism, and he and his wife were married in a Buddhist ceremony. ?But the profuse praise Jobs received from commentators and executives focused, as Jobs himself did, on his success in the world of computers and technology.

The creator and innovator who held 342 patents had apparently never returned to a confident faith in a Creator and Innovator Who willed the universe into being.

*?? *?? *?? *? ?*

These two life stories, especially their prosaic endings, leave me saddened.? I felt the same way when an old college professor of mine, a Unitarian Universalist and a secular humanist, died of a heart attack.

Just what happens, I?ve wondered, when a person with no faith meets the Person he?s ignored throughout his lifetime? ?Does a merciful God say, ?Hi! I?m God! Let me show you around!? ?Or has the deceased person really ignored countless opportunities to encounter Him during life, and is that poor soul now relegated to an eternity outside the gates of glory?? I don?t know.

When I die?and I hope am permitted to know when that day is coming?I pray that I have the grace to do it differently.? I hope that I am able to speak from the heart to the people I love, to atone for my many mistakes, to assure them of my constant love, to promise them my continued prayers.

I hope that I will have the grace to refocus my attention, which is frequently diverted by one futile project or another, to God and to the things that matter most.? I hope I can spend my last days in prayer, in meditation, in preparation to take the next exciting step. ?I hope that I have the sense to leave my work behind, to face eternity unencumbered, and to step freely into the arms of a loving God.

Caltex prepares for end to octane 91 sales - The Nation

Home ? business ? Caltex prepares for end to octane 91 sales

WATCHARAPONG THONGRUNG
THE NATION October 20, 2012 1:00 am

As part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, the company will also launch the reality show "Driving Change with Caltex", which Chevron said was aimed at reaffirming its goal of expanding its retail fuel business in Thailand.

Adrian Bendeck, country chairman and general manager for products at Chevron (Thailand), said the company was well prepared for the planned end to octane 91 sales.

Chevron is studying demand at each of its petrol stations in order to decide whether to convert its fuel pumps from octane 91 petrol to octane 95 or to E20 gasohol. Gasohol is a blend of petrol and the bio-fuel additive ethanol.

Caltex currently has the largest share of the octane 95 market. Caltex stations sell about 20 million litres of octane 91 petrol per month and about 3 million litres per month of octane 95.

Bendeck said Chevron has joined hands with pay-TV network Fox International to launch Caltex's first CSR activity in Asia-Pacific, the reality programme "Driving Change With Caltex". The programme is being introduced in Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand between October 5 and November 4.

Thailand will be the third market to see the launch of the programme after Malaysia and Hong Kong, where the activity was launched yesterday.

"The parent company has selected Thailand as one of those [markets] for this major activity as it emphasises that there would be investment and business expansion in the country," Bendeck said.

Chevron (Thailand) earlier announced plans to build an additional 100 petrol stations by the end of 2014.

Through the "Driving Change With Caltex" programme, celebrities from each market will be invited to go on a mission with well-known Southeast Asian host Henry Golding to develop a local community.

In Thailand, the two-day mission included the establishment of a library for the Nong Plong Pode School in flood-hit Tha Tako district of Nakhon Sawan province.

Each country's episode will be aired via social media and the website www.drivingchangewithcaltex.com. After each mission is complete, it will form the basis of a documentary. These will be aired on the Fox International network. The film about the mission in Thailand is due to be aired in early January.

9 killed in clashes in southeast Turkey

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Turkey's state-run agency says clashes between Turkish security forces and Kurdish rebels in the southeast of the country have left nine people dead.

The Anatolia news agency says Saturday three Turkish troops and three Kurdish rebels were killed in fighting that broke out in Hakkari province, near the border with Iraq.

The agency said rebels also attacked a military unit in Bitlis province, northwest of Hakkari, killing three government-paid village guards who are helping the Turkish security forces.

The attack comes amid a sharp escalation in violence over the past few months in Turkey's southeast, where the rebels of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, are fighting for self-rule for Kurds.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed since the group took up arms in 1984.

Personal financial software is a wonderful comfort and tool when you are trying to keep your personal finances on track. A good CFO also holds his time in high regard. This means that the buck starts and stops with you. Positives: Quicken personal financial advising software programs have some of the most comprehensive and professional personal financial budgeting sets out there. The free edition offers up money saving ads.

When comparing the prices it is important to find out if the product requires must be updated occasionally. One of the best time-saving features in personal finance software is that it can download transactions for purchases made with credit card or checking accounts or income deposited into accounts. Can a Buffalo bride plan a royal-like wedding on a modest budget? Most programs are free of charge and can help you take control of your personal budget and finances within 5 minutes. Catch those frivolous expenses before they happen by becoming more aware of your spending on a day-to-day basis.

If you plan correctly these expenses will be much less stressful for you. If you have decided that you would like to be more serious and professional about your personal financial budget then I suggest you spend the small amount of money ($15-$60) and find professional personal financial budgeting software. In a short time, you will see a cash deposit to your personal account that could save you from the current financial disaster you find yourself in. Based on your requirement you can find software that is perfect for you. Your personal budget was broken down into categories such as rent, groceries, utilities, and leisure.

They are portable so can be carried anywhere and simple to operate. It may be that tapping into an user forum with some budget products may be worth more than the software. If you need software to help you organize your debt and give you a simple budget to follow home budget software is what you need. These categories can be really detailed such as having individual credit cards listed by name or they can be broad such as having one group named credit cards for all your credit card bills. And if you are like most people, somewhere along the line you have probably strayed from that budget.

Are you aware of what you?re really spending? The ring, the party, the announcements. Think about it, a business has to carefully track income and expenses in order to successfully turn a profit. If you do a lot of baking in the winter months and for the holidays that follow Halloween, using candy bought on clearance in recipes that call for chocolate really helps you stick to your budget. The graphs will allow you to easily spot trends and areas that are in need of attention in order to keep you on budget.

Sadly so many of us still haven?t appointed a household CFO to create and manage a budget. But I didn?t get impatient, I didn?t get fed up, I didn?t get frazzled or resentful. Think of personal financial software as having a 24/7 bookkeeper, accountant and financial advisor. Works that used to be tedious will now be sweat-free. In these paragraphs I?ll let you know what things to think about when searching for camera systems for your home.

The best, most exact way to deal with all of these variations is to create a spending plan that is based on day-to-day cash flow, and not get too hung up on creating a rigid monthly budget. Creating a household budget doesn?t mean doing without; in fact, you set up what you are willing to live with. Keep track of your spending. The users can also request for the daily, weekly and monthly expenses or they might also narrow things down to specified life categories like bills for the grocery. This very simple process will allow you to see exactly where your money is going and how you can make adjustments to get yourself to where you want to be financially.

You always have something to look forward to when returning home. Here are tips for getting going and choosing the right package for your needs.

starting online? the 5 secrets to internet marketing successWhen getting started online, it's important to get started on the right foot. Where on earth do you start?

Here are my five ?essentials for learning Internet marketing fast, so you can see results quickly and begin making income.

The Big Secret for Internet Marketing Success

....is YOU. If you have the Passion to Build Yourself a Business Online, whether you're a person with a F/T or P/T job, a student, a stay at home parent or an unemployed job hunter - then YOU Can Do It.

As you strive to build a home based business you'd be proud of, it is important to find the right approach to learning online network marketing. Understanding the principles of how to use attraction marketing to connect with others online can be a useful tool to growing a successful business.?So, Here are my

5 Secrets for Internet Network Marketing Success

these are tips to cut down your learning curve and build your downline fast.

1. Get yourself a marketing system:

There are a few popular online marketing systems out there today that will help guide you and cut down your learning curve. You want to find a system that has high converting lead capture pages, is easy to use, and will pull you in to a supportive community of fellow marketers from who you can get training and advice. My recommendation would be My Lead System Pro(MLSP) because this is the system I use.

2. Focus on 1 to 2 marketing methods:

Decide where you will focus your prospecting and marketing effort. Facebook, Forums, or Video Marketing? When you have a consistent go-to marketing strategy, you can create momentum from your focused efforts. Jumping from one method to another before you have a steady flow of leads coming in can dilute your results and your income. As a marketing system, MLSP will teach you how to set up, and give you training in many ways of marketing - You choose the one you want to start with.

3. Decide how you want to deliver your content?

Decide what method of content delivery you are going to use long-term to build your business. Most online network marketers will choose blogging, but the search engines also love YouTube and article sharing sites as well.

Poachers Gun Down Iconic Ibis

Goja, named by Jane Goodall and the poster bird for a project to save northern bald ibises from extinction, was killed by illegal hunters

Vienna, Austria? The leading bird in a European project to develop a method to save a rare species of ibis was killed last weekend by illegal hunters in Italy. Goja, a northern bald ibis (Geronticus eremita), was on her way to wintering grounds in Tuscany when she was shot down.

The northern bald ibis has been extinct in the wild in Europe for nearly 400 years and is critically endangered in North Africa and the Middle East. A team led by biologist Johannes Fritz from the University of Vienna has been hand-raising the birds and teaching them how to migrate from breeding areas north of the Alps in Germany and Austria to wintering grounds in Italy. The project aims to learn more about the bird and about migration in general.

Goja initially learnt the migration route in autumn 2009 by following an ultralight aircraft. She made headlines in 2011 when she became the first of the team?s birds to fly back on her own to Germany for the summer.

Although unconventional, the team believes that its aircraft-based teaching method could eventually be used to reintroduce the bird to Europe and to aid in conservation elsewhere. The researchers have made important progress ?on getting a method that looks like it's probably going to work?, says Chris Bowden, international species recovery officer at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in Sandy, UK, and chair of the International Advisory Group for the Northern Bald Ibis.

Goja was a key element in the team?s success to date. Not only was she the first to migrate on her own, she was also the first migrator to raise chicks in the breeding area she came from, and last year she became the first to lead a juvenile, a male called Jazu, to the wintering grounds. ?I think she is somehow a special personality type,? Fritz said of Goja last summer, ?a successful and active type of bird.?

Goja's fate is not unique, last autumn the project lost up to 15 of 37 migrating birds to hunters in Italy. As the team shifted its focus from aiding migration to combating illegal hunting, Goja became even more important. Primatologist and conservationist Jane Goodall (from whom Goja got her name) began including Goja?s story in her public lectures, where she drew attention to the problem of illegal hunting of all migrating birds.

When Goja was shot on Saturday, she was leading two juveniles; one was shot dead along with her and the other is missing, presumed shot. A fourth bird traveling alone survived a shooting but will probably not return to free flight. But the poachers have not yet managed to put an end to the migration: Jazu safely led a juvenile to the wintering grounds this year, making sure another generation will know where to go. The birds are now being kept under lock and key until the end of hunting season.
